FAQ
Who is BASS?
Bissett Accounting Student Society is the largest club at Mount Royal University with over 130+ members every year. Our goal is to bring students closer to their future accounting careers. We do this by exposing accounting students to a variety of opportunities such as networking events with industry professionals and CPA representatives, hosting case competitions, excel workshops and more!
When is recruiting Season?
The most common recruiting is in the Fall, where you apply in early September, and interview in late September. Don't be discouraged if you do not land a job during the fall recruitment because you have lots of opportunities throughout the year. Just keep your eyes peeled!
What is case competition?
A case competition is an in-depth accounting challenge. If you take part in a case, you will be given a company, a scenario, and some financial information. You then get time to analyze the information, come up with a conclusion and create a presentation that you and your team will present to the judges.
What is a cpa? Why is it important?
CPA stands for Certified Public Accountant. It is a professional designation given to individuals who have passed the Uniform CPA Exam and met specific state education and experience requirements to become licensed as a CPA.
You can earn your CPA designation once you have received your undergrad. You may choose to work in the industry or at a public accounting firm while taking the required courses along the way. On average, it takes 2 years to get your CPA designation and then you're off to your next journey!
For more information on the designation process, please check out the graph found here: https://www.cpaalberta.ca/become-a-CPA/CPA-professional-education-program
For more information of the required courses and to make sure you're on track, check out this website: https://www.cpaalberta.ca/become-a-CPA/CPA-preparatory-courses
Most employers will ask you if you are looking to receive your designation and will help you along the way. Some employers are already set up through the CPA Advantage program which helps to create a smoother transition and experience as you work through the courses and work experience.
